While massive self-propelled billet harvesters dominate the flat plains of Ribeirão Preto, the Sugarcane Windrower (Cortadora de Cana / Enleiradora) remains a critical tool in the Brazilian sugar-energy sector. Its importance is twofold:
- Seed Cane Production (Mudas): Mechanical chopping damages the eyes (buds) of the cane. To plant high-quality nurseries (Viveiros), farms use windrowers to cut whole stalks gently, preserving germination viability.
- Steep Terrain (Declive): In the Northeast of Brazil (Nordeste) and hilly regions of Minas Gerais, giant harvesters cannot operate safely. Tractor-mounted windrowers are the mechanized solution for these “areas de declive”.
The Engineering Challenge: A windrower is essentially a giant circular saw. It uses heavy steel base-cutter discs spinning at high RPM to slice through thick stools of cane. The inertia is massive.

The Physics of the Base Cut: Inertia and Impact
Cutting sugarcane requires severing a thick, fibrous stalk at ground level. This is done by counter-rotating discs with replaceable blades.
1. The Flywheel Effect (Inércia Rotacional)
The base-cutter discs are heavy steel plates. Once spinning at 500-800 RPM, they possess significant kinetic energy.
The Danger: When the operator depresses the clutch or throttles down to turn at the headland, the tractor engine slows down faster than the cutter discs.
The Consequence: Without an Overrunning Clutch (RL), the energy flows backward from the implement to the tractor. This “back-driving” force pushes the tractor, making it difficult to stop (dangerous on hills) and can shear the internal PTO brake of modern tractors.
The Solution: Der RL Clutch acts like a bicycle freewheel. It drives power to the implement but slips freely if the implement spins faster than the tractor.

2. The “Stump” Shock (O Toco da Cana)
Sugarcane fields are rough. Old ratoon stumps can be hard as wood. Stones are common.
The Impact: When a blade hits a stone or a high stump, the torque spikes instantly.
The Defense: A Friction Clutch (FV). While a shear bolt is cheaper, replacing bolts in a hot, snake-infested cane field is not ideal. A friction clutch slips momentarily to absorb the peak shock of hitting a rock, then re-engages, keeping the operation continuous.

Scenario A: Seed Cane Nurseries (Viveiros de Mudas)
Goal: Obtain whole stalks with undamaged buds for planting.
Machine: Tractor-mounted side-delivery windrower.
Challenge: Smoothness. Excessive vibration can shake the stalks and damage the eyes.

Challenge: Lift Angles. As the tractor navigates terraces and slopes, the implement moves up and down relative to the PTO stub.

Material Science: Surviving the Dust and Juice

Zinc-Nickel Plating: Standard paint does not survive the “sandblasting” effect of cane harvesting. Exposed steel rusts quickly due to the acidic sap.
