Harvesting the Hills: PTO Shafts for Coffee & Fruit Harvesters
Field Notes: The Vibration Challenge in the Coffee Belt
Brazil is the world’s largest coffee producer, and mechanization is key to efficiency. In the steep hills of Sul de Minas and the vast plateaus of the Cerrado Mineiro, the Coffee Harvester (Colhedora de Café / Derriçadeira) is the most critical machine. Whether tractor-pulled (arrasto) or self-propelled (automotriz), these machines rely on a unique mechanism: High-Frequency Oscillation.
The harvesting rods vibrate at over 1,000 cycles per minute to shake the cherries off the branch. This vibration creates a punishing environment for the PTO driveline. The shaft doesn’t just transmit rotation; it must survive intense harmonic feedback.
The Problem: In the 2023 harvest, we observed a common failure in tractor-pulled harvesters navigating terrace planting (curvas de nível). When the tractor turned at the end of a row on a steep slope, standard PTO shafts were binding. The combination of the Acute Angle (turning) and the Oscillating Load (shaking) caused catastrophic failure of the tractor’s PTO stub shaft and the harvester’s input gearbox.

The EVER-POWER Solution: We engineered the Series 6 “Hill-Climber” CV Driveline. This shaft features a Constant Velocity (Wide Angle) Joint on the tractor side to allow for 80-degree turns on steep hillsides without velocity fluctuation. We also utilized “Lemon” Profile Tubing with Rilsan Coating. The coating absorbs micro-vibrations and prevents the tubes from fretting (corrosion due to vibration) during the intense shaking of the harvest cycle.

The Physics of “Derriça”: Oscillation and Hydraulic Power
The mechanical harvesting of coffee and citrus relies on two main power transmission methods via the PTO.
1. The Mechanical Shaker (Vibradores Mecânicos)
In older or simpler tractor-mounted units, the PTO drives a mechanical gearbox with eccentric weights or cams to create vibration.
The Stress: Harmonic Resonance. The shaker creates a pulsing load that travels back up the shaft. If the PTO shaft has any “play” (looseness) in the telescoping tubes, it will hammer itself to death.
The Solution: Zero-Lash Profiles. We use precision cold-drawn “Lemon” tubes. The geometry of the lemon profile inherently centers itself under load, reducing the radial gap that causes rattling. This dampens the vibration from the shaker head.

2. The Hydraulic Power Pack (Unidade Hidráulica)
Modern harvesters (like the Jacto K3500) often use the PTO to drive a high-capacity hydraulic pump. This pump then powers the shaker motors, fans, and conveyors.
The Geometry: These machines are often trailed. Navigating the tight spacing of coffee rows (3.0 – 3.5m) requires sharp turns.
The Risk: Turning a standard U-joint past 30 degrees creates velocity fluctuations. This causes the hydraulic pump to “pulse,” sending pressure spikes through the hoses and damaging the shaker motors.
The Solution: Wide-Angle (CV) Joints. A CV joint maintains constant RPM regardless of the angle. This ensures the hydraulic pump receives a smooth, steady rotation even when the tractor is turning 80 degrees at the end of a row, protecting the entire hydraulic circuit.

Operational Context: The Terrain Factor
The topography of Brazil’s fruit regions dictates the equipment needs.
Scenario A: Mountain Coffee (Café de Montanha)
Context: Steep slopes (>20%) in Sul de Minas. Tractor and harvester are rarely on the same plane.
Challenge: Telescoping Range. As the tractor climbs a terrace and the harvester follows, the PTO shaft must extend and compress significantly.
Requirement: Long-Slide Shafts. We provide shafts with extended inner tubes to ensure there is always at least 300mm of overlap. If overlap is too short, the shaft can separate or buckle under load.
Scenario B: Citrus Groves (Citricultura)
Context: Dense canopies in São Paulo. The machinery (often sprayers or canopy shakers) brushes against the trees.
Challenge: Entanglement. Branches and leaves are constantly contacting the driveline.
Requirement: Streamlined Guarding. Our guards are designed with smooth, tapered cones to deflect branches. We use internal bearings that allow the guard to stop rotating immediately upon contact with a branch, preventing it from winding up and ripping the guard off.
Interchangeability & OEM Replacement
Brazil has a strong domestic industry for coffee and fruit machinery.
Fitment Guide:
EVER-POWER Series 6 shafts are engineered replacements for:
- Jacto™ (K3 / K3500 / KTR): Direct replacement for the main pump drive shafts. We stock the CV versions required for the trailed models.
- TDI™ (Maquinas Agrícolas): Compatible with the input drives of their diverse coffee harvester line.
- Matão™ / Kamaq™ (Roçadeiras/Shakers): Heavy-duty upgrades for orchard maintenance equipment.
- Mecânica Agrícola™: Universal fitment for locally built hydraulic power packs.
*Disclaimer: OEM names are for reference only. EVER-POWER is an independent manufacturer.
Compliance with Brazilian Regulatory Standards (NR-12)
NR-12 is strictly enforced. Fruit harvesting often involves manual labor (panha manual) occurring in the same field as machinery. The risk of proximity is high.
The “Orchard-Safe” Guard
A spinning shaft in a narrow coffee row is a hazard to workers and to the crop itself.
EVER-POWER Harvester Shafts utilize:
- Non-Rotating Technology: The guard rides on bearings and does not rotate with the shaft. This is critical. If a worker brushes past it in a narrow row, the guard is stationary.
- Full Cone Coverage: The guard extends over the entire CV joint. CV joints are bulky and have many moving parts that can grab clothing or branches. Our “Mega-Cone” covers this hazard completely.
- UV Resistant Plastic: Our yellow/orange guards are formulated to resist the intense UV radiation of the tropics without becoming brittle and cracking.

Material Science: Corrosion from Fruit Juice
Citrus and Coffee harvesting environments are surprisingly corrosive.
Acidic Residue: Broken coffee cherries and citrus fruits release acids (citric/malic). This juice sprays onto the chassis and PTO shaft.
Zinc-Nickel Plating: Standard paint often peels due to the vibration of the harvester. Once peeled, the acidic juice attacks the steel tubes, causing them to rust and bind. We use Zinc-Nickel Plating on our telescoping tubes. This plating provides superior chemical resistance, ensuring the tubes remain smooth and slide freely even after seasons of exposure to fruit sap and humidity.
Case Study: The Coffee Farm in Guaxupé
Client Profile: A specialty coffee producer in Guaxupé (Minas Gerais) with steep hillside plantations.
The Problem: The farm uses tractor-pulled harvesters. They were replacing the tractor’s PTO stub shaft annually due to twisting/shearing. The cause was identified as “Bottoming Out.” When the tractor crested a terrace, the PTO shaft compressed fully and became a solid bar, transferring the weight of the harvester into the tractor’s transmission.
The EVER-POWER Solution: We supplied custom-length Series 6 CV Shafts with Short-Collapsed / Long-Extension capability. We optimized the tube length to allow for maximum compression without bottoming out.
The Result: The new shafts accommodated the extreme articulation of the terrain. PTO stub failures stopped completely. The CV joints also smoothed out the operation during turns, reducing the “shudder” felt by the operator. The farm estimated a saving of R$ 25,000 in tractor repairs in the first year.
Maintenance: The “Sap & Dust” Routine
Coffee harvest is dusty; Citrus is sticky. Both kill bearings.
- Wash and Grease: Weekly washing is required to remove the sticky sap/dust buildup on the tubes. If this hardens, the shaft won’t telescope. Apply fresh grease immediately after washing.
- CV Ball Greasing: The centering ball in the CV joint takes the brunt of the load during turns. It must be greased every 8 hours. If it runs dry, the joint overheats and fails.
- Guard Chains: In orchards, branches often snag the safety chains. Check them daily. A loose chain means a rotating guard, which is a fire risk if dry leaves wrap around it.

Agri-Market Trends: Precision Harvesting
The trend in Brazilian coffee is “Selective Harvesting”—harvesting only the ripe cherries. This requires machines with variable frequency shakers that can be fine-tuned. This precision demands PTO shafts with zero vibration to ensure the frequency commanded by the computer is the frequency delivered to the tree. EVER-POWER’s balanced shafts are the link that makes this precision possible.
