The Physics of the Perfect Bed: Stability and Protection

Laying plastic film 0.03mm thick requires a stable mechanical platform. The PTO shaft influences the entire geometry of the bed.

1. Torsional Rigidity and Bed Finish

The rotor of the bed former cuts and throws soil against a rear forming hood.

The Physics: If the PTO shaft tube twists (winds up) and releases (springs back) during rotation due to soil resistance variation, the rotor speed fluctuates.

The Result: This fluctuation creates “chatter marks” or ridges on the bed surface. The plastic film bridges over these ridges, leaving air gaps. Hot air trapped in these gaps can burn young seedling roots (“Chimney Effect”).

2. The “Stop-Start” at Headlands

Mulch laying involves frequent stops. At the end of a row, the operator lifts the machine, cuts the plastic, turns the tractor, and lowers the machine.

The Risk: If the operator forgets to disengage the PTO while lifting to max height, standard U-joints will bind and hammer.

The Solution: Wide-Angle CV Joints. For high-efficiency farms, we recommend a Constant Velocity (CV) joint. This allows the bed former to be lifted while rotating without vibration. It clears the soil from the hood during the turn, preventing blockages when starting the next row.

Should I use a clutch or a shear bolt?
